About UltraLight Living

About Us Articles

I started Ultralight Living in 2007 ago out of my personal interest in the ultralight movement. My interested started with discovering ultralight backpacking. Thirty years ago, my backpacking trips included a 35 pound pack and I have only bad memories of pain and struggle. Then, a couple of years ago, I read about ultralight backpacking and decided to give it a try. Now, I often solo backpack in the Oregon wilderness with a 7 pound pack (not including food and water). It is absolutely wonderful. Along with that discovery, I have been enjoying the added bonus of owning wonderful merino wool clothing, ultralight trail running shoes, ultralight jackets, etc. I began learning more and more about the whole concept of ultralight and decided that it is a movement worth supporting.

The purpose of Ultralight Living is to help other people learn about the ultralight movement. The site is a resource site and includes custom news feeds about the ultralight movement, stories about ultralight products and links to other web sites connected with everything ultralight.

The ultralight movement is really a new way of thinking. It's about reducing the burden of weight. Backpacking is only a tiny part of that movement. You can see ultralight in the news today ranging from computers to clothing to commercial jetliners. By producing products that are lighter, manufacturers are also creating products that use fewer natural resources, use less energy, are more economical and have superior design. So, aside from the nice feeling of carrying only 7 pounds on my back, the ultralight movement is also a move toward reducing consumption and striving toward sustainability.

I am a retired CEO and I have a number of web sites that I produce as a public service (and several more planned). Please visit my other sites too:
